Collection: Maheshwari Sarees — Handwoven on the Narmada, Block-Printed in Bagru
Maheshwari Sarees — The Saree That Has Never Needed Improving
My father used to say the best clothes have nothing to hide. Flip it over, hold it to light, run your thumb along the border — it shows you exactly what it is. That is the Maheshwari saree.
Woven in Maheshwar on the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh for over three hundred years, this textile had reached a point so complete that changing it would only take away from it. We have been a family of hand block printers in Bagru, Rajasthan, since 1978. When we first started sourcing Maheshwari sarees, we recognised the same philosophy in the weave — honest materials, slow process, nothing that doesn't belong.
What Makes a Maheshwari Saree Genuine
Knowing three things takes thirty seconds and saves you from buying the wrong piece.
The Reversible Border (Bugdi)
Turn the saree over. On a genuine Maheshwari, the border looks completely identical on both sides — same pattern, same zari, same colour. This interlocking weft technique cannot be replicated cleanly on any machine. If the reverse looks different or messy, it is not handwoven.
The Chatai Weave
Hold the body up to natural light. You will see a fine checkered pattern shifting between matte and luminous as you turn the cloth. This is not printed on — it is built into the structure of the fabric itself on the loom.
The GI Tag and Handloom Mark
Maheshwari textiles carry a Geographical Indication tag from the Government of India. Every authentic piece must come with a government Handloom Mark. Every saree in our collection is GI-certified. If any seller cannot show you this, that tells you something important.
Maheshwari Silk Sarees — For Days That Stay With You
There are handloom sarees for every day and sarees for the days that stay with you. A Maheshwari silk saree is the second kind.
What Makes Maheshwari Silk Different
Woven with pure mulberry silk in both warp and weft, the drape is warm, fluid, and genuinely different from anything synthetic. The pallu designs come from the classical Maheshwari vocabulary:, the temple spire border, the bel creeper, the heera diamond — a design language older than most cities we live in.
How We Source Our Silk Sarees
We visit weaving families in Maheshwar in person. We check border reversibility by hand, look at zari quality under natural light, and verify weave density before anything comes back to us. Several pieces are paired with hand block-printed blouse pieces from our Bagru workshop — natural indigo and iron rust, teak blocks carved by our own artisans.
Price: ₹5,500 to ₹22,000 depending on imitation or real gold and silver zari.
Maheshwari Cotton Silk Sarees — Beautiful on a Today
Not every woman wants to save her best saree for a special occasion. Some of us want to wear something beautiful every day.
Why Cotton Silk Works So Well
Cotton in the warp, silk in the weft — it breathes the way cotton does but carries the surface quality only silk gives. You can wear it to work, pack it without ceremony, put it on in summer heat and not regret it by evening. It washes well, travels well, and hangs back into shape after a full day of being worn.
The Chatai Weave Is More Visible Here
The slightly thicker cotton warp makes the checkered pattern stand out more clearly than in pure silk. Many women who know Maheshwari sarees well prefer this version — the craft shows more plainly, and there is something satisfying about wearing something where the making shows.
Our Bagru Block-Printed Cotton Silk Maheshwaris
Each saree arrives handwoven from Maheshwar. Our artisans in Bagru then hand-print the border — natural indigo, iron rust, dabu resist — using wooden blocks carved in our workshop. Every border comes out slightly different. The pressure of the hand, the dye on the block, the texture of the cloth at that exact point — all of it leaves a mark. That variation is not something we correct. It is the whole point.
Price: ₹2,500 to ₹8,000.
Traditional Maheshwari Sarees — Colours That Came From the Land
Traditional Maheshwari sarees live in a very specific colour world — deep indigo, warm ochre, pomegranate red, peacock teal, ivory. These colours did not come from a trend report. They came from the plants, soil, and minerals of central India.
Classic Motifs Still Woven Today
Padma (lotus) — sacred across Indian traditions, present in dozens of border variations
Matsya (fish) — symbol of the Narmada, woven into pallus for centuries
Bel creeper — runs along the border the way a vine moves along a wall, unhurried
Heera (diamond) — geometric, precise, formed purely from the angle of warp and weft
Temple border — rows of stylised spires traced directly to Maheshwar's own architecture
No embroidery. No sequins. Nothing added after the loom. The decoration is the weave itself.
Maheshwari Sarees Price — What You Are Actually Paying For
A Maheshwari silk saree takes one weaver three to seven days to complete. The yarn, the zari, the skill — none of this is cheap, or should be.

Frequently Asked Questions — Maheshwari Sarees
Q1. What is a Maheshwari saree?
A handwoven GI-certified saree from Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh. Made on the banks of the Narmada River since the 18th century under Rani Ahilyabai Holkar. Known for its reversible bugdi border, chatai weave, and lightweight silk or cotton silk drape.
Q2. How do I identify a genuine Maheshwari saree?
Flip the border — it should look identical on both sides. Hold the body to natural light — look for the woven chatai check pattern. Ask for the government Handloom Mark tag. If the seller cannot show all three, it is not genuine.
Q3. What is the difference between Maheshwari silk and cotton silk?
Silk saree — pure mulberry silk, rich drape, heavier feel. Best for weddings and occasions. Cotton silk saree — lighter, breathable, comfortable for daily wear and office. Both carry the authentic bugdi border and chatai weave.
Q5. Which Maheshwari saree is best for daily wear?
Maheshwari cotton silk. Lightweight, breathable, easy to wash, comfortable in summer heat. Looks elegant without feeling heavy.
Q6. Which Maheshwari saree is best for weddings?
Pure Maheshwari silk with real zari border. Deep colours like indigo, pomegranate red, or peacock teal with gold jewellery work best.
Q7. What are traditional Maheshwari saree motifs?
Chatai (mat pattern), heera (diamond), eent (brick), leheriya (Narmada wave), padma (lotus), and the temple spire border — all inspired by Maheshwar's forts, temples, and the Narmada river.
Q8. Can I wash a Maheshwari saree at home?
Cotton silk — hand wash in cold water, mild detergent, dry in shade. Pure silk — dry clean only, especially with real zari. Block-printed — wash separately first 2–3 washes, natural dye release is normal. No Maheshwari saree goes in a washing machine.
Q9. How do I store a Maheshwari saree?
Wrap in cotton muslin, never plastic. Store in a dry wooden drawer or almirah. Refold every 2–3 months to avoid permanent crease marks.
Q10. Are Maheshwari sarees suitable for all seasons?
Yes. Cotton for summer, cotton silk for all seasons, pure silk for cooler months and evening occasions. All three are far lighter than Banarasi or Kanjivaram.
Q11. What jewellery suits a Maheshwari saree?
Silver zari saree — silver or oxidised jewellery. Gold zari saree — kundan, temple, or polki gold jewellery. Bagru block-printed saree — brass, copper, or natural stone. Keep it simple.
Q12. Why buy from BagruSareeSuit?
Hand block printing family from Bagru since 1978. We source directly from GI-certified weavers in Maheshwar — no middlemen. Every piece verified by hand. Our Bagru block-printed Maheshwaris combine two craft traditions on one saree. Transparent pricing, no fake discounts.
